Top questions to ask yourself now.
Organization is a harsh word that many business owners hate hearing. The process is dreaded by many causing images of post-its, colored folders, and mounds of papers scattered all over desks onto the floor. Even the concept of list making seems daunting. What list? What goes on the list? Why am I making lists and how can I get out of having to make one?
Today’s business society is alive and everchanging. Trillions of different jobs, work atmospheres, companies, employment opportunities, platforms, and more, exist. Being unique in the business world is much harder with all this variation. The number of industries has become innumerable and so many more small companies pop into existence daily. Business owners must act aggressively and be more competitive through lowering prices to undercut a competitor, buy out competing businesses, and search for loop holes they can utilize other companies are missing to make their businesses more lucrative. The world, in business and in economics, has become more of a shark tank vs. a trade community among friends. “Dog eat dog world” has never been more real.
Do you have what it takes? Are you still stuck in the employee mindset? Do you have a home service business that is the next best thing or can provide a new contribution no one has thought of? Is your business one that can be scaled to make millions in revenue, or, in reality, do you have a pastime, hobby, or job, that is fun but has no real ability to grow into a corporation?
To start any business, you need a crystal-clear vision of the company you are trying to create. You need to have a goal in mind and a direction. There needs to be a written plan as to how you plan to get there, and you need to refer to it often. This vision is your dream, your wish turned to life. Set short term goals to get to that main destination but remember to keep learning. Continuing your education is very important because every aspect of business is fluid and changing. You need to be laser focused and determined to get where you want to go, and of course, never give up. But most of all, you need to get away from the mindset of an employee and begin thinking like the CEO of your own company.
By definition, a job is a paid position of regular employment, a task or piece of work that you use to receive an income, a standard 9-5. If you are going out on business calls, being that person who installs the tech or does the maintenance, you have a job not a business. Many business owners still take an interest in this aspect of their company, but they are not the sole person in this position. If you are training, hiring, not delegating, running all forms and areas of the business, you will not have the time or resources to work on growing the business. The first step to becoming a millionaire in the home service industry is to first OWN A BUSINESS. If the business goes away when you are not there because you ARE the employee, you ARE the technician and the one doing everything, you will not make it to that millionaire status you want. Growth requires room to grow and time to dedicate to growing.
A business is a person’s regular occupation, profession, or trade, the practice of making ones living by engaging in commerce and sales. Robert Kiyosaki says, “a business is ownership and control of a system and the ability to lead people”. So, are you the business or owner of a business? Are you an entrepreneur, a leader who can you run the business that has employees working their regular jobs? Are you taking the risks for the betterment of the company? Can you say, through your business, you are wealthy and have recurring income that maintains itself through well placed systems and organization?
The home service industry is a 400-billion-dollar industry. “The home service industry describes businesses whose main purpose is working on residential homes, though some of these also take on commercial business. This includes plumbing, HVAC, flooring, landscaping, concrete, moving and storage services, and more. The industry is growing and with the explosion in online and mobile booking services major companies such as Google and Amazon are diving into the estimated $400 billion market. Indeed – Amazon Home Services covers more than 700 types of services!”
That is a huge market! The best part is, it is still growing. Your business, with your millionaire mindset, can take a chunk of that market and grow exponentially, changing the face of the industry and your life as a business owner.
All that being said, do you have what it takes to be a “home service millionaire”? Or, are you comfortable with your small business, a couple of employees, and a livable income? Both are great options, but this blog is geared to help you achieve what many entrepreneurs dream of, to make it to the “home service millionaire” status and live as millionaires do.
Questions to ask yourself:
• Do you have replicable systems in place to support your company in its growth?
• Do you still view yourself as the underdog, or make excuses such as “it’s all still new, growth will come”?
• Do you have your business structure written out, every job to run it listed and characteristics of the employees to fill those positions?
• Are you able to pinpoint your USP (unique selling point) that sets you apart from others offering the same services?
• Is your business model scalable and able to be replicated in other locations?
• Can you see yourself as a CEO of your own company with a view for its expansive future?
• Is your “why” something you are so passionate about that it can sustain you through the hard times, motivate you to grow and be aggressive, and others can get behind?
These questions are mere parts of what business owners must be able to answer if they have businesses that can compete with others in the industry.
Michael E. Gerber, author of ‘The E-Myth Revisited’ claims in a blog post from 2017 that there is no real difference between a successful small business and a successful big business. While that may be true, I mean both are lucrative and possibly sustainable, but which one is really going to make you millions? Which one is really a business that can make you that home service millionaire?
Steve Jobs says it best, “You should never start a company with the goal of getting rich. Your goal should be making something you believe in and making a company that will last”. Getting rich is simply the biproduct of creating and running a business that can grow. Finding your why that motivated you to start your business in the first place, reworking it, revisiting it, or even just writing it on the wall or piece of paper in front of you, will help you make the decision to if this blog is going to help you.
